S. David Mitchell

Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Associate Professor of Law

My job responsibilities:

I am responsible for all of the academic issues that routinely occur at the law school. For example, one of my duties is to prepare the academic course schedules for the following year. Another task is to create a welcoming climate for our students that will not only help them survive in law school, but to thrive in law school.

I advise students on their course selection, and I identify and hire adjunct faculty to ensure that our curricular offerings are broad enough to provide our students with a complete and well-rounded legal education. I am also the one who is responsible for conducting investigations of student conduct code violations. I teach a variety of courses:

  • Torts
  • Advanced Torts
  • Criminal Justice Administration
  • Law and Society
  • Collateral Consequences of Sentencing

Apart from these formal duties, there are a number of informal duties that fall within my job responsibilities.

How I got my start at MU:

I was hired in 2006 after completing a two-year stint as a Scholar-in-Residence at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Why I love working at MU:

I enjoy working with students, faculty colleagues and staff who are dedicated to social justice as well as the opportunity to work with a variety of community members in Columbia and around the mid-Missouri region.

My association with the university has permitted me to have a platform to impact the local, state and the national community in some very positive ways, such as with my work on felon disenfranchisement and other related issues.
