April Colvin

Position: Patrol Lieutenant, University Police

My job: I supervise the third shift patrol.  Aside from conducting patrol activities, I am responsible for reviewing incident reports and providing support and guidance to the officers I work with.  My duties also entail instructing, scheduling and coordinating the self-defense programs our department offers to the University community.

How I got my start at MU:  I came to MU in 1993 to earn a degree in Animal Sciences, with the intention of becoming a Veterinarian.  I started working for MUPD as a student employee in 1994 and found that I enjoyed law enforcement.  After completing my Animal Sciences degree in 1998, I was hired as an officer with the department.  I decided to combine my love of animals and the outdoors with law enforcement by earning another degree in Fisheries and Wildlife and then moving on to be a conservation agent.  By the time I finished my degree in Fisheries and Wildlife in 2004, I was hooked on my job with MU.  So it is here I happily remain.

Why I love working at MU:  My co-workers are my extended family and they make coming to work fun!  I enjoy the diversity of the people I encounter every day.  Most of all, I enjoy being an active part of our community and the work I do with our self-defense programs.  I have experienced few things as rewarding as being an integral part in helping people find self-confidence and empowerment.  In this profession, I get that opportunity all the time.
