Assistant Professor and State Cereal Crops Extension Specialist (080213)

Position Description: The Division of Plant Sciences seeks applications for a 12-month, tenure-track assistant professor position as State Extension Specialist for Cereal Crops. The position is 75% extension and 25% research.

Responsibilities: The employee will be the primary contact for extension education information, technology transfer and programming regarding production of corn, wheat, small grains, sorghum and other cereal crops in Missouri. The specialist will provide statewide program leadership that assists, supports, and strengthens the work of other specialists and scientists; regional extension specialists; and producers and will work closely with industry representatives to facilitate technology transfer and adoption of best management practices. The appointee will work closely with producer organizations such as the Missouri Corn Growers Association and Missouri Farm Bureau and with the appropriate state agencies such as the Missouri Department of Agriculture and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

The successful candidate is expected to develop nationally recognized extension and applied research programs focused on sustainable production systems for corn, small grains, sorghum and other cereal crops. Responsibilities include development and implementation of an applied and relevant research program on topics that might include, but are not limited to, cultural practices, stress management, and grain quality and use. The appointee will be an active participant in a team of extension and research faculty members to develop interdisciplinary programs to support the industry.

The appointee is expected to attract extra- and intra-mural funding to support extension and research programs, advise graduate students, and serve the department, division, college, university, and professional societies as appropriate.

Qualifications: The applicant must have a Ph.D. degree in Crop Science, Agronomy, Plant Sciences, Weed Science, or related field. Prior experience with extension programming, evidence of scholarly accomplishments, and evidence of extramural grant support is desirable. Effective oral and written communications skills are required.
